Strategy games put you against an opponent who is trying to beat you, and take luck out of the equation. Every piece is visible, every move is yours, and when you lose you can usually point to the exact decision that cost you.
Perfect information and why it matters
Nearly everything here is a game of perfect information: both players can see the whole board at all times. Chess, Checkers, Reversi, Connect Four and Mancala all work this way, which means there is no hidden hand to blame - only the moves you did or did not see.
The exceptions are instructive. Battleship hides the enemy fleet and becomes a game of deduction rather than calculation. Tower Defense and Plant Squad add resource management, where the pressure is economic instead of tactical.
