How do you play Peg Solitaire?
Jump one peg over an adjacent peg into an empty hole, and remove the peg you jumped over. Pegs move horizontally or vertically, never diagonally. You keep jumping until no legal move remains, and the goal is to finish with a single peg left on the board.
How many pegs does Peg Solitaire start with?
The standard English board has 33 holes arranged in a cross, with 32 pegs and one empty hole in the centre. A perfect game ends with exactly one peg remaining, ideally in the centre hole where the empty space started.
What is the best Peg Solitaire strategy?
Avoid moves that break the board into isolated regions, since pegs stranded in a separated area can never reach the rest. Work from the outside inward, and favour jumps that keep the remaining pegs connected. The classic three-move mistake is clearing the arms of the cross too early, which leaves the centre unsolvable.
Can every Peg Solitaire game be solved?
No. Most random sequences of moves lead to a dead end with two or more pegs left. Finishing with a single peg requires planning several moves ahead, and the standard centre-start board has thousands of distinct solutions but far more losing lines.
